The Archer

In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is identified as Centaur Chiron. A centaur is a half human & half horse. Unlike most centaurs with animalistic tendencies, Chiron was known for his gentleness and wisdom. Hercules accidentally shot Chiron with a poisonous arrow, but since he was immortal he was unable to find release in death. So Hercules pleaded with Jupiter to release Prometheus and let Chiron replace him. Prometheus had been chained to a rock by the gods for giving fire to man and could only be freed if someone replaced him. So Chiron replaced Prometheus and gave up his immortality. In recognition of his goodness, Jupiter placed Chiron in the stars.
